What are human rights?

Human rights are fundamental entitlements and freedoms that every person is inherently born with and retains throughout life, regardless of nationality, background, beliefs, or lifestyle. Universally applicable and designed to protect individual dignity, fairness, equality, respect, and autonomy, these rights ensure that people are treated justly and have the freedom to make choices about their lives. While they are generally inalienable, certain situations, such as breaches of law or national security concerns, may lead to restricted access to specific rights. Rooted in shared human values, human rights are protected by international agreements, national laws, and frameworks like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. These protections aim to foster a society that values justice, peace, and the well-being of all, ensuring that everyone can live freely and contribute to their communities.

How Human Rights Protect and Empower You

Human rights are essential for everyone, not only those experiencing oppression or discrimination. They safeguard many aspects of everyday life, such as the right to hold and share personal opinions, access education, enjoy privacy with family, and be protected from unfair treatment or punishment by the government.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

The horrors of the Second World War highlighted the urgent need for global human rights protection. Established in 1945, the United Nations brought together over 50 countries to draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which was adopted in 1948. This landmark document was the first to outline the fundamental rights and freedoms to which all people are entitled worldwide.
