If you believe your human rights have been violated, there are practical steps you can take to address the situation.

  1. Taking Action
There isn’t a single or “right” approach to addressing a potential human rights breach—it will depend on your specific circumstances and the context of the issue. To get started, it’s helpful to explore initial sources of advice and support. Consulting a trusted human rights advisor or lawyer is highly recommended before you proceed with any legal action.

  2. Resolving Issues Informally
In some cases, you may be able to resolve the issue without going to court. A discussion with the individual or organization involved may clarify the issue and potentially resolve it. If an informal resolution isn’t possible, you can file a formal complaint. Be aware that strict time limits apply for legal actions related to human rights breaches, and acting promptly is often necessary. Some cases may require that legal proceedings be initiated within three months or less, so time limits should be carefully checked to avoid missing any deadlines.

  3. Preparing to Take Action
If you decide to pursue action, confirm that the Human Rights Act is relevant to the individual or organization in question. It’s also essential to identify which specific rights may have been breached. Familiarize yourself with the rights protected under the Act to understand your position more clearly.
